Taco was good, refried beans are above average. Steak is also very delicious. Attentive servers. Our server spoke only broken English. Reasonable prices, good food, worth the trip. Don't let the modest setting fool you.

Menu isn't huge. Some classics are missing. Mood works as a utilitarian store front with fifes filled w Mexican bottled drinks. Sala was a simple chipotle - done well. Churizo was a bit tame. Don't be scared of the meat. Flavor it properly. But seriously, this is the best Mexican food in the dells. Skip the others. This is better. Or if you disagree then just spend the rest of your life at some place named after a lumberjack buffet restaurant. Just go. Make a decision.

Hidden gem. Very good authentic food with reasonable prices. A bit daunting when you walk in but the first bite of salsa did it. We tried the enchiladas and the steak ala mexicana and both were really good. Ask for the house made guacamole. It is located in the downtown dells and worth the trip.

What a great experience with Carlos and Colotlan! We had a bachelorette party over the summer and asked Carlos at Colotlan to cater our boat charter. He was SO great, SO fun, SO accomodating and excited to help us out. He went over the top for us (including driving way out of his way to pick up fresh shrimp!) and we couldn't have appreciated it more. Oh yeah - the food was GREAT!

First, don't be turned off by the dive-like interior! The building was obviously once a greasy spoon of some sort. We almost turned around and left, but we're very glad we didn't. My wife and I stopped into Colotlan a few days ago during an impromptu trip to the Dells. We chose the place based entirely on its high rating on Yelp, and boy, did we make the right choice! I have a passing familiarity with authentic Mexican cuisine, and I knew what to expect, but for those of you who don't, it can seem almost bland when compared with the Americanized version. I believe it is a lack of salt and emphasis on quality meats and tortilla. Carlos makes and prepares absolutely everything from scratch, and it shows. We were the only ones there to eat, although there were some teenagers walking in, looking for summer jobs. Carlos tried to tell them what it would mean to work for him, but they didn't seem to want to hear it. After they left, he clarified what was going on, and he brought out samples of what he meant -- tortillas before they are cut and cooked into chips, cuts of steak for Milanese, and a pot of vegetables being cooked into salsa. He takes great care to produce and prepare the food at Colotlan, which I feel is well worth the trip. If you like Mexican food, you definitely should give this place a try.

Amazing Mexican food and love the atmosphere! We were on vacation with our kids and were looking for some good "Pilsen Chicago" type food and found the highlight of our trip! Great tacos and excellent enchiladas. My son loved the corn with cheese and mayonnaise too. Highly recommend ESP when in the Dells and looking for great food!

I have been using Yelp for years and have yet to write a review....but I had such a wonderful experience with Carlos and Colotlan that I had to share. I was in the Dells for a bachlorette party this past weekend and Carlos at Colotlan catered our boat charter. It was wonderful!!! He could not have been more accommodating and the food was fantastic! He prepared the freshest guacamole, salsa and fajitas for us - and even drove to Madison to pick up fresh shrimp! If you're planning a party in the Dells area and are looking to include Mexican food, this place is legit. THANK YOU CARLOS!!!

Great Place to eat, Real Mexican food ! I took my family of 8 there for dinner and I felt like I was back at home eating my mothers cooking. I have nothing but goods things to say about this place. The staff was very friendly, the service was quick and the prices were very reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family.

Highly disappointed but thankful for some food! Despite the long wait the food turned out okay. Just okay. Wouldn't recommend. The service was not great but the waiter tried. Small business and needs a lot of work with running the business itself. The price was also a lot more pricier than expected for the appearance of the restaurant. The "steak ranchero" was not even tasty! They were so busy they didn't know what to do. They should be prepared for the rush being located inside of a busy area in Wisconsin.

I actually happened by the Colotlan restaurant as I was in the city for the Taste of the Dells festival. The festival really didn't appeal to me too much when I actually visited. Besides having some chain-restaurants like Arby's, it lacked a lot of diversity. There was mostly very typical American food like brats 'n potatos but more importantly, there was little ethnic food like Indian, Thai or Mexican and hence how I ended up at the Colotlan. The place was dead when I got there. Mainly because of the festival so I was pretty much the only customer. The menu is interesting featuring a lot of typical options as well as some not so typical options. One of the things I was not too big of a fan about is the lack of free chips&salsa, a staple to most mexican restaurants. That said, I ordered a "swiss cheese burrito" - basically a burrito with some swiss cheese melted on top. I got it with a chopped avocado and bean and rice and jalapeño peppers. Although they didn't have hot sauce at the table, I ended up using some of the homemade salsa they have from the chips( I ended up buying chips separately.) The food itself was good, pretty fresh -- the owner claimed they make everything to order which I do believe. It was all good and honestly went quick. I mean, compared to something like Pedros, this place is definitely my preference.

RIPOFF! They overcharge everything. $13.99 for bupkis enchiladas! I asked if I could have some sour cream, they actually had the nerve to charge me $1.50.... My friend had steak tacos, which were very skimpy for $11 Place is a tourist trap, better off going to Taco Bell. 3 of us bill was over $55 shame. Lady at the counter was just adding up our bill very rude, they just want your money. They know most people won't come back because The Dells are churn and burn with summer tourists. If this place wasn't in a tourist area it wouldn't last 3 months. PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!! TOTAL SLOP!!!!

This was an ok restaurant. It was pretty overpriced for mediocre food. It wasn't bad food, there was just nothing to make it stand out. Not necessarily somewhere I would visit again.

Had the best tacos here at a great price. The food was authentic and the service was top notch. I will definitely be back here !!

Food was good. Service was lacking. Was promptly greeted and seated by a young friendly girl and our order was taken. Food arrived and server left. Bill was not brought to us and when we asked the woman behind the counter her body language suggested we were interupting her day. Chimi was tasty, cheese and steak. Guac, delicious. Chips ok. Salsa, spicy and flavorful. Portion size small if you are used to El Faro in Elgin, IL. Price for one dinner was $12. Good deal for tourist trap on Wisconsin Dells main drag.

  • Kerry H.

I love their tacos. Haven't tried any other dishes but the tacos are the real deal. Don't expect anything fancy. In fact, if you've been to Mexico, this may remind you of other vacation memories and I guess that's why I like it. The owner is friendly and the staff is pleasant.

If you are looking for fast service and crappy americanized mexican food, then this is not the place for you. If you want authentic mexican where all of the recipes are put together on site, then this is your place. The chorizo tacos are amazing! This is one of the few places where I've actually ordered chorizo tacos and was not dissapointed-I actually ordered more! They actually offer cilantro + onions as additional toppings, as well as fresh avacado (if not sold out) to add to their tacos. Carols was happy to give us the history of the restaurant and proud that the restaurant offered authenticity and quality food. I can't say that I blame him. The food definitely speaks for itself. We will definitely return the next time we are in The Dells...or even passing through.

I came here on a late night before we left to head back to the Chicago area. Food was OK at best, yet the hot salsa was very good. No complaints about the service, it was fast and efficient. Speaking of which, the bus girl was doing a great job. At one point the asshole dickhead cook yelled at her for the whole restaurant to hear, something about she could work faster if she didn't wear flip flops. If she is slowed down by that then her normal speed must rival the Flash. Anyway, this prick is the kind of guy that should be dragged into the middle of the street and beaten about the head and face until he's unconscious. I would go back but the food quality definitely needs improvement, perhaps he needs to cook better? LOL

This restaurant is inexpensive but the food is average yet close to authentic. Service was excellent and they are very attentive. It's not a fancy restaurant, more of a "dive" vibe. . So if your're in the downtown Dells area and need a quick bite this may be for you, but if your looking for a nice sit down place then I suggest going somewhere else.

This Mexican Restuarant really does not deserve more than two stars. The waitstaff is nice, however, the food needs help. I ordered the carne asada big mistake it is as thin as a piece of paper! If you are looking for a dive this is the place for you. The prices are too high for the food you get.

WOW! This was the best Mexican food we have had in a long time! The staff was exceptionally friendly the moment we entered. We ordered a beef burrito and beef tostadas. The burrito was packed full of goodness with cheese melted on top. The beef was perfectly seasoned! The tostadas were excellent - topped with a slice of nicely ripened avocado. The beans and rice that accompanied the dishes were very tasty. The pico de gallo they served on the side was also very fresh and delicious. We will definitely return to this restaurant when in town again.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
